From South to North
In 1993, I hooked up with an interactive Cd-Rom company in my home town of Houston. One month later, we loaded our Mac Quadras onto a truck and hightailed it to Seattle, where our publisher was located. When the Cd-Rom window slammed shut the next year, so did the doors of our publisher (but for different reasons). We got evicted from that nice Bellevue suite and set up shop in a HUD building in Belltown.
The Stupidest Thing I Ever Said
In early 1995, I left the interactive company and decided to go it alone. For several months I searched for contract Cd-Rom work. I found one gig. During this same time, I joined a new media group that had strong ties to academia. We met weekly at Elliot Bay Books. The group spoke of one thing: The Internet. At the ripe age of 24, I spouted off, "AOL is stupid and so far, so is the Internet."
A Fascination Bomb
By August of 1995, I was broke. A local company had been poking me like a pest. They wanted me to design them a website. I finally agreed and slapped open an HTML 1.0 book. "You've got to be kidding," is what I said. A month later, when 2.0 was released, I bounced up and down like a baboon. The geek in me was born. My red-hot fascination with the Internet was too. 12 years later, I continue to have this same draw.
Out of the Trenches
Seattlites don't need to be reminded of our watery winters. But this past November, I got so soaked I couldn't dry myself out. That's when Noah showed up. He needed some screws to finish off his Arc. I told him that I had a bucket full in the back, and that I would give it to him if he let me on board. He looked at me quizzically, "Keep the screws," he said. That was that. I had to find another way to get out of the trenches.
From North to South
I remember the last sunset I saw in Texas before I left. It was a big, fat, fiery head stuck on the horizon. I knew that I would miss it; I just didn't know how much. In 2007, I will make 3 trips to my college town Austin, Texas. I want to plant my feet down permanently in Austin by Q4 of this year. You'll see my bright yellow truck pull out of Seattle with the VainNotion flower on it.
One Email Away
No matter where I live, I am always one email or phone call away from friends and clients. Relationships and creative projects are my livelihood. Technology takes care of the miles in between. 70% percent of VainNotion's clients lie outside of Washington State already (I've been working on this move for awhile).
In My Years in Seattle
I made lifelong friendships. I grew my short hair into long, hippy hair. I axed my family name and gave myself a new one. I lived in 9 different locations and went through 3 cars. I even got married and divorced during this time. That's enough for one town. I will be back to visit often, but not in November, December, January or February. These are the months you will want to visit me.

Happy two--double O--seven my friends.
May this year bring you a true sense of coming home.

Your very kooky designer,
Colleen Lynn
